Weakness of Literature Translation
A paradox lies in translating literature. People need translated versions of foreign literary works to broaden minds and exchange ideas. However, they have to rely on the unreliable translation, a consequence of the inherent language differences rather than translators’ inability. A Chinese will frown at the plain and rough English version of a famous poem of the Tang Dynasty, and vice versa to a British. To clarify the translation, translators must dissolve and reshape sentence structure, further explain the unparalleled words, therefore killing the language beauty. The beauty does not consist in the mere meaning of texts; it demands the participation of senses. To feel the rhyme, tempo, and sentence length are, if not more, equally important as to consider the content. Where can you find the beauty if all these are fundamentally altered? Thus the only way out is to read the original version, in whatever language, provided one desires the genuine elegance of language.
